Branch in Tientsin (now Tianjin)

Tientsin
DAB Tientsin branch
On December 1, 1890, the DAB branch in Tientsin was opened. Originally, the bank was only to be represented in this city through a close relationship with one of the trading houses located there, but ultimately the decision was made to set up the bank's own branch, seeing as the Chinese Viceroy Li Hongzhang (Li Hung-chang) resided there. At around the turn of the century, Tientsin had developed into one of the important port cities. In 1895-96, Franz Urbig, who later became proprietor of Disconto-Gesellschaft, was briefly Director of the branch. As to the "flair" that Tientsin had at this time, he commented rather disparagingly: "As to free time, excepting the evening company, there was not much to do considering the surroundings of Tientsin were not attractive and the only promenade one had was the crown of what was called the Dirty Wall, which ran behind the city." From 1906 to 1917, the DAB branch in Tientsin resided in the stately building shown here that was located in Victoria Road. Following the First World War, Tientsin lost in economic importance, but the DAB branch existed there until the end of the Second World War and was first closed on October 27, 1945.
